Frequently Asked Questions
Can anyone use a Third Party Supplier for their natural gas needs ?
Yes. All residential, commercial and industrial customers in the state of New Jersey are eligible to purchase their gas supply from anyone they choose.
Why are customers allowed to purchase natural gas outside the utilities?
Since January 1, 2000, all gas customers in the state of New Jersey have been able to choose their own gas supplier. The natural gas industry's structure has three distinct components (i) the commodity SUPPLY portion (ii) the long-distance TRANSMISSION of the commodity and finally (iii) the local DISTRIBUTION of the commodity to our homes and businesses. For many years, your local utility handled all three phases of the business in a “vertically integrated” manner. After decades of growth, construction, and addition of market participants, it was determined that competition could safely be introduced via deregulation of natural gas . To address the needs of a competitive environment, those three phases of utility operations were separated or rearranged and thus the emergence of Third Party Suppliers.
If I swith to Systrum Energy am I locked in to any time frame?
Absolutely NOT. We built our company on offering a month to month contract with no sign up fees or any fees to switch back to the utility if you so choose.
Who do I call in the case of an emergency?
You are still your local utility’s customer and they will respond to any needs that may arise.
Is it possible a customer can run out of gas while being supplied by a Third Party Supplier ?
NO. Natural gas will never stop flowing for any customer. If any type of situation involving supply occurs, it is the responsibility of the third party supplier not the customer.
Are Third Party Suppliers governed by any governmental agencies?
Although natural gas is not regulated ,the suppliers must be licensed with the Board of Public Utilities ( BPU ).Most local utilities also have certain financial standards which must be met on a continuous basis.
If I have any billing issues who do I call?
Any questions other than the cost of the commodity would be directed to your local utility.
What is the process to sign up?
We just need you to either fax or mail an application form which NJ legislation requires for anyone signing up for alternate supply of gas. Once we have the form we process it without any disruption to the consumer. In approximately 1-2 weeks you will receive a letter from the utility informing you when the switch will take place. This takes on average 2 billing cycles to go live.
